Excessive use of the swear word 'PC' appears in this article. Those who are
easily offended are advised not to read this article.

Dave Cobbledick. We've all heard of him. He's famous for numerous
Shareware releases (now re-released as licenceware), various commercial
games and also his new multi-format disk magazine, VOICES. However, after
four years of service the ST with his STOS-written products he has now left
the scene for the PC...
Apparently leaving the ST had been on the cards for a while. Dave had been
thinking about it when Trenton Webb (editor of ST FORMAT) came around to his
house to interview him for publication in FORMAT (that interview should be
out soon). This was quite a while ago and even then Dave mentioned to
Trenton that he may be leaving the ST scene. Dave said that he "looked at
the market of the PC compared to the ST market and then heard of the demise
of ST REVIEW which was the final straw". Dave believes that ST REVIEW
is\was a better magazine than ST FORMAT and that it was the wrong mag that
died (nods of agreement throughout the ST scene). It was just another
reason for Dave to leave the ST and then, "a nice PC came along..." so he
bought it.
I asked Dave if he felt guilty about leaving the ST for the PC, he replied
that he had been given a bit of a guilt trip by various people (who will
remain unnamed) but he, "has a thick skin" and can take it. So Dave sold
his ST straight away and is now in possession of a £1500 PC setup with all
the works. He intends on producing a number of licenceware and Shareware
products over there with the use of a programming language by the same
people who made STOS called CLICK 'N' PLAY. Dave told me that this allows
him to create a similar game to the ones he used to produce on the ST in
just two hours compared to 2 months. He also intends on learning VISUAL
BASIC, C++ and VISUAL C++ (if I remember correctly) for the future. He says
that the P.D. scene is absolutely massive and "if you can make a mark in the
scene then you could possibly give up your job!".
I spoke to Dave for quite a while just about his PC setup and I must say
that he seemed very, very happy with it. He seemed very pleased with his
purchase and couldn't stop talking about all the wonderful features. He
told me that people had said that they would expect him back on the ST scene
within 6 months but Dave also said, "After using my PC I would NEVER move
back to the ST". Dave is so impressed with his PC that he said "it leaves
the ST looking like an old man!". Dave says, "PC's are expensive, but it
shows. You get what you pay for!".
The above paragraph makes it look as if Dave is glad to leave the ST scene
but Dave told me that he really, really loved the ST and will be very sad to
see the back of it but due to lack of support from both the users, and the
producers, it was the only option for him and, "the lack of support is
what's going to finally kill it off," Dave said, "it's going to begin to
decline very rapidly, especially now that ST REVIEW is dead.". Dave intends
to keep an eye on what's happening with the ST and the ST scene though, "You
can't devote four years of your life to something and then just totally
forget about it," he told me.
So, what's happening to all his releases? Well, MERLIN have got the
copyright to his commercial releases now "for an undisclosed amount!" and
all of Dave's Shareware releases have been re-released as licenceware
compilation disks, hence the recent withdrawal of them from all the
P.D.L.'s. As for VOICES, (Dave's disk magazine) that will continue with
issue 2 coming out at the end of this month (January 1995) and apparently
it's going to be a very good issue. In case you haven't heard of VOICES,
it's a multi-format disk magazine about everything and anything and is for
any machine that can read ASCII format files basically. You can obtain
VOICES from POWER P.D. Dave is also releasing the source code to 7 of his
games onto three licenceware disks. Dave said, "This is something I always
promised myself that I would never do whilst I will still on the ST but now
that I'm not..." They will be available soon and will include everything
such as fonts, graphics and samples although some external files will not be
there but can be obtained by buying the full game. This will then allow you
to rip Dave's games to shreds and take bits out to use for your own
productions.
Dave also has one final release for the ST that he finished just before he
sold his ST which is called CRAZY LETTERS and will be sold at £3 as
licenceware. It is some type of word game and should be released within a
matter of days. The game also comes with a little program labelled as
FREEBIEWARE which will choose 6 random numbers for your lottery ticket.
After this final disk though there will be no more ST releases from Dave
Cobbledick.
Not everybody liked Dave's work but generally he was a very respected member
of the ST community and it will certainly be ashame to see him go. Dave
will no doubt read a copy of this little article at one point or another so
from all of the ST scene "GOOD LUCK MATE!". Maybe we can get an article out
of him about his life on the ST and what it was like, eh Dave? (Hint
hint!). Good luck with the PC market Dave. Goodbye.
